Canary Islands Culture & Travel tips

Learn more about the Canary Islands culture here. You can find more information about Tenerife and the rest of the islands, here.

Carnaval

Tenerife’s carnival, or “el carnaval”, is the most famous carnival in Europe and second biggest in the world (first place going to the famous Rio de Janeiro carnival). Carnaval is at the center of Canarian culture. For two weeks, the streets of Santa Cruz are filled with joy and bright colors as the numerous Carnival events take place.

Later meal times

Meal times in Europe are generally later. Lunch in most households, and restaurants, is served at around 14hs or 15hs and dinner typically after 20hs.

You also may notice some small businesses may close during “siesta” time, typically between 15hs-17hs.

Slow life down

As it is typical with “island living”, you will see people in the Canary Islands (and many parts of Europe) prioritize having a slower-paced lifestyle and enjoying the little moments in life.

We encourage embracing this when you are visiting Tenerife and prioritize taking time to enjoy the natural beauty, community interactions, and the relaxed attitude towards work-life balance.

Travel tips

Tipping culture

Unlike in the U.S., there is no tipping culture at restaurants. If you find that service at a restaurant was excellent, we would encourage you to slightly round up when paying your bill. A 10% tip would be considered sufficient and greately appreciated.

It is not common to tip taxi drivers or hair dressers.

July weather in Tenerife

July can be a warm month in Tenerife with temperatures averaging between 21-29 degrees celcius (70-85 degrees farenheit). Evenings can be slightly cool when the ocean breeze picks up, but in general the Canary Islands experience a dry heat (unlike Florida’s humid weather) with very little chance of rain.

Currency

Spain uses Euros for their currency. We suggest exchanging some money before your trip at the local bank to avoid the high exchange fees at the airport stands.

Credit cards are accepted in almost all establishments.
